A Bush of Birthdays

I have spent 30 birthdays in the African tourism industry and have certainly taken advantage of living on the most dynamic and exciting continent in the world.

This year I am fortunate to be celebrating my 70th birthday with special friends who celebrate their 70th birthdays too.

I am looking forward to making memories with my wife, children, grandchildren, the rest of my family and my dear friends.

Angama Mara to celebrate my birthday in 2019, with some dear friends. We enjoyed five glorious days mingling with the migration and the animal life in the Mara Triangle. Set atop the Oloololo Plateau, with an eagle’s view over the Maasai Mara, Angama Mara is a truly breathtaking game destination.

An epic weekend at Londolozi for my 60th with a group of close family and friends. The header image was taken by one of the rangers at Londolozi. This is me with my family and 2 close buddies about to hop on the charter flight to the lodge. I could not have dreamed of a better way to celebrate my 60th. the lodge was exquisite, the wildlife diverse and I have no words for the company.

Below are some special memories of celebrations with my family and friends

A trip for my granddaughter, Leah’s, 5th birthday to Molori in the Madikwe Game Reserve for her first-time Big 5 experience, an area famous for being malaria-free and kiddy-friendly. Turns out she loves the little 5 and the ugly 5 even more.

We celebrated my son’s birthday in the Okavango Delta. This is a wonderful photo he took of us on a mokoro. The Okavango is a vast inland river delta in northern Botswana. It’s known for its sprawling grassy plains, which flood seasonally, becoming a lush animal habitat.

We celebrated my mom’s 70th in Bushman’s Kloof. We took over the entire lodge with family joining us from all over the world. Nestled in the foothills of the Cederberg Mountains on South Africa’s dramatic lesser-known west coast, this ecological oasis is a magical wilderness retreat among open plains, sandstone formations and ancient bush art sites dating back 10,000 years.

For a friend’s birthday, we walked the Napi trail – one of the best ways of experiencing the African bush is on foot on an overnight walking trail. The wildlife experience is very intimate and it was a wonderful adventure with friends.

These are just a few highlights – my memories of the African bush could fill a few books – I think I may write at least one.
