As a grandparent, I often think about what kind of world my grandchildren will inherit. Will it be a world that is rich in natural resources, or one that has been depleted by previous generations? Will they be able to experience the beauty and wonder of nature, or will they only be able to read about it in books?
I want my grandchildren to inherit a world that is full of life and opportunity. I want them to fall in love with the Earth and all its wonders. That is why I am raising them to be Earth Ambassadors.
“Earth Ambassadors” is a concept I came up with to encompass child-centred African travel experiences. At Timeless Africa Safaris, we are developing and curating our Earth Ambassador programme to help parents deliver mindful tourism experiences to their children – or grandchildren.

An Earth Ambassador is someone who is passionate about taking care of our planet and its inhabitants. They are respectful of life, including animals, plants, and people. They understand the importance of conserving our resources, and they are committed to making a difference in the world. As an Earth Ambassador, my grandchildren will learn about the interconnectedness of all life on our planet. They will develop a deep respect for nature and the natural world. And they will be inspired to take action to protect our planet and its inhabitants.
As parents and grandparents, we can begin to instil these values in our children from a very young age. We can show them how to tread lightly on the earth and leave no trace. We can take them on safari, where they can learn about the importance of conservation. We can teach them about the traditional cultures of Africa, and the importance of respecting those that came before us.
Some of the most exciting African experiences my own grandchildren have enjoyed were just on a safari holiday: learning about different animal tracks; seeing and remembering the big 5 five, the little 5 five, the ugly 5 and the shy five; cleaning their teeth using twigs from the toothbrush tree; connecting with their safari guides and spending afternoons sourcing their lunch from the lodge’s organic gardens.
But those are not the only experiences your children and grandchildren can enjoy. When they’re a bit older, they can go behind the scenes to learn what it is to be a game ranger and look after conservancies and find out why animals are tagged; even ‘tagging along’ with the rangers to view real animal tagging situations.
Our Timeless Africa Safaris team have curated magical kids’, tweens’ and teens’ activities to help beautifully ingrain the Earth Ambassador values into their hearts and minds.
I am confident that by raising my grandchildren to be Earth Ambassadors, I am leaving them a legacy that will make a difference in the world. And that is something I can be proud of.
Our goal is to raise a generation of Earth Ambassadors who will be stewards of our planet for years to come.
