Guests entering or leaving South Africa are required to complete an online Customs traveller declaration before they travel, unless they qualify for one of the limited paper-based exceptions. Completing this in advance helps ensure a smoother process on arrival or departure.
What is the Customs traveller declaration?
This declaration forms part of South Africa’s Customs process and helps guests declare any goods, currency, or other items that may require Customs attention.
Who needs to complete it?
In general, the declaration applies to anyone entering or leaving South Africa by air, land, sea or rail, including South African citizens, residents, and international guests.
A parent, legal guardian, caretaker, or assisting person may complete the declaration on behalf of a minor or someone who is unable to complete it themselves.
When should it be submitted?
The declaration must be submitted no more than 24 hours before departure from the country you are travelling from.
How to complete the declaration:
Guests can complete the declaration online via the SARS Traveller Management System or through the South African Traveller Management System (SATMS) App, available from your mobile device’s app store. Where available, self-service kiosks may also be used at certain ports of entry or exit.
Once submitted, SARS will send a confirmation with instructions on what to do when you arrive at, or depart from, the relevant port. Please keep this confirmation available on your phone or in printed form, and follow the instructions and signage at the port.
What information will you need?
- your passport or travel document details
- travel details
- contact details
- details of any travelling companions, where applicable.
You will also be asked to confirm whether you are carrying any goods, currency, or bearer negotiable instruments that need to be declared.
You do not need to declare ordinary personal effects for your own use.
What if you cannot submit the declaration online?
Guests who are unable to submit the declaration electronically due to a system failure, lack of internet access, or another reasonable ground may be assisted at the port by an officer or at a self-service terminal, where available. In limited cases, a paper declaration may still be used.
Transit guests
Air or sea passengers who are only transiting through South Africa and do not leave the designated transit area are not required to submit a traveller declaration.
