Sure, those extra ZZZs are tempting, but the bush has its own alarm clock. That elusive big cat or rare bird often appears the very morning you consider sleeping in. Game drives are worth every sunrise.
Patience is part of the safari magic. Each outing unfolds differently, so lean into the slow rhythm of the bush. You never know what might stroll by – or peek out from behind the trees.
Chat early, maybe over that first afternoon tea, about what excites you most. Guides love sharing their knowledge, and the more they know about your interests, the more likely you are to spot them.
Think of it as a ‘que será, será’ (what will be, will be) kind of drive. Cruising with curiosity beats chasing the Big Five in a blur. And you can relax knowing that your guide is in radio contact with other guides; they always they let one another know when there’s something special to see.
A bush walk offers a different perspective – tiny tracks, fascinating plants and critters you’d otherwise miss. Drop in on conservation activities or other lodge experiences; the bush has layers worth experiencing.
Not every corner hides a lion. Sometimes a brilliantly coloured beetle or unexpected bird is the real showstopper. Learn the Small Five and the Ugly Five – they’re surprisingly satisfying to spot.
Spotted something interesting? Speak up. Even guides can miss a moment, and nothing beats that little rush of being the one who spotted it first.
First glimpse of a lion or an elephant? Soft voices, still bodies and respect go a long way. Your guide is an expert in animal behaviour and the rules of the wilderness – listening keeps everyone safe.
Most private safari lodges will provide a pair, but your own set does make a difference. From tiny birds to distant giraffes, a pair of ‘bins’ turns curiosity into clarity.
Take photos like mad for the first few drives, then put the camera down and really watch. You’ll be amazed at how much more you see (and hear and smell).
